Forestry prices improve

Posted on Thursday 15th November 2018

Log prices have reversed their recent trend and begun to climb upwards again, with unpruned saw

logs increasing by NZ$3-to-4 per JASm3 at the wharves this month, while pruned logs increased NZ$7-

to-9 NZD per JASm3

This was helped by the lower value of the New Zealand dollar and reduced competition from US

logs, as a result of the tariffs wars. Buyer sentiment was also buoyed as the China softwood log

inventory dropped by approximately 400,000 m3 over the last month to 3.0 million m3.

The PF Olsen Log Price Index increased $2 to $132 for November and is currently $5 above the two-

year average, $8 above the three-year average and $16 higher than the five-year average.
