Carter Holt Harvey fined for serious injury to worker

A worker who suffered serious injuries after being caught in a press machine at the Carter Holt

Harvey LVL plant at Ruakaka in Northland in October 2016 has led to the company being fined

$371,000 plus costs and reparations.

Steven Vincent suffered multiple fractures, cuts and lung injuries after he became trapped in a

conveyor belt that dragged him into the press, crushing his upper body.

WorkSafe inspectors found the Carter Holt Harvey plant had breached their health and safety

regulations as the press was not guarded.

Mr Vincent spent a month in hospital recovering from his injuries, returning later to undergo

surgery. Carter Holt Harvey was ordered by the District Court in Whangarei to pay $55,000 in

reparations to Vincent, in addition to the fine and costs.
